I've just returned from a 6 week trip to NYC, Washington and Ecuador and face a minor dilemma: How much is too much? I have been backpacking more than a year of the year and a half since I retired from Dalhousie. The money that falls out from such a process is gone as are all my savings of any sort. The smart money says I buckle down for a bit, save some cash and then head out again.
Of course, smart money would probably still be working at Dal. So, the real question is...how bad do I want to do the next trip? Here is how I rate travelling right now:
TIME: That I got...other than not knowing how much I have
HEALTH: Still as good as last year, alto the clock is noticeably ticking
MONEY: None whatsoever. Will have to borrow against existing equity
MOBILITY: Like health, pretty good, but sliding everyday
DESIRE: As strong as ever, maybe more. I really do enjoy backpacking
In my mind (the only one that really counts), I am willing to borrow $$ to travel, because realistically, it is my only negative concern.
So, A winter walk across the 750+ kms of the Camino de Santiago is in my sights. I love winter, really love walking and am fit/healthy enough to do the hike without any real concerns.

Hey, the really 'smart' money has me listening to tales of warm weather walking in a few months.

ReplyDeleteThings in Doha, Qatar, are going nicely.
I'm not sure what happened to my previous comment. It disappeared before my fingers.
A nice account of your trip. I enjoyed just about every step. Hell, that foot looked painful.
Look forward to getting together over the summer. We are heading for Mount Kilimanjaro and a safari before heading for NS mid-July.
See you then,
Mike & Cindy
